Vintage Mid Century Modern Art Pottery California Originals 769 |succulent planter | serving bowl
Mid Century Modern collectible art pottery from California Originals #769 w/ original sticker. Would make an awesome succulent planter. Also great as a serving bowl, centerpiece for your coffee table, or statement piece. The brilliant glazes are signature color combinations of mid century art pottery.
Size: 13"L x 3"H x 4"W
(plants are not included. For demonstration purposes only).
Condition: Because the original paper label is still intact inside, I assume it has never been used. It is in beautiful condition. The glaze has a typical vintage crackle appearance.
History: California Originals opened in 1945 as Heirlooms of Tomorrow. When they began, they made quality porcelain lace figurines. The changing taste of the modern homeowner demanded less frill as the 1950s rolled around and kitsch became popular.
The company responded to the change in decor and started making their novel brown cookie jars followed by novel figurine style cookie jars. The shift in decorating continued to change and as the mid century modern style grew in demand, by the 1960s the pottery began to take on sleeker lines with bright mod colors in their signature drip glazes. This was probably the highlight of their existence. While some collectors seek the collectible cookie jars, its the wild colored ashtrays, bowls and planters that have become iconic for California Pottery.
California Originals of Torrence California closed its doors in 1982.
